Building Design

Unlike an off-the-shelf product, architectural design cannot be reduced to a simple square metre rate. A square metre estimate or hourly rate can often be misleading, which is why we prefer to provide clarity and accuracy from the outset. Both architects and building designers play vital roles in shaping the built environment. In Tasmania, architects are required to hold a degree in architecture, while building designers must hold a diploma in building design. Architects often bring extensive academic and theoretical training, whereas building designers typically offer a more hands-on understanding of construction, materials, and buildability developed through practical on-site experience.

For a project to proceed through local authority approvals, it must be designed by a licensed architect or licensed building designer. Both professionals must be accredited, maintain current insurances, and hold a Consumer, Building and Occupational licence to operate in Tasmania. Architects are additionally registered with the Board of Architects. Choosing between the two ultimately comes down to personal preference, project scale, budget, and the level of collaboration and trust you seek in the design process.

Builder – Open.  Building works on all classes of buildings

(We are licensed to undertake any type of building work on all classes of buildings.)

Building Designer – Limited.  Architectural design and documentation of Classes 1 and 10 buildings, and Class 2 – 9 buildings of up to 2 storeys with a maximum floor area of 2000 metres square. 

(We are licensed to provide design and documentation for any type of residential project. We can also provide design and documentation for commercial buildings up to 2 storeys with a maximum floor area of 2,000 square metres.)
 

We are required to undertake mandatory CPD training and hold all necessary insurances to maintain our annual licence renewal, e.g., professional indemnity insurance, contract works insurance, public liability insurance, etc.

We can forward a portfolio of over 40 written references received during the many years we have been in operation.

Phillip Hawksley will personally undertake your building design. Qualified professional consultants will be engaged to complete the engineering design, surveying and other reports necessary to achieve approvals.
